The new Michael mission in GTA Online is easily one of the most exciting additions the game has seen in a long time, finally bringing the single-player icon into the online world in a meaningful way. To get through it without any confusion, it helps to know exactly what you need beforehand and how the mission chain actually unfolds, so you don't end up running around the map or missing the moments that unlock the next step.
Everything starts with the "A Safehouse in the Hills" update, which introduces a set of luxury mansions and a few familiar faces. Once the update is installed, open the in-game browser on your phone, head to the Prix Luxury Real Estate site, and buy any one of the three new mansions. All of them count toward the new storyline. When you walk into your new place for the first time, you'll get a short scene with Michael and Amanda De Santa that sets up what's coming next, though the main mission still won't be available yet.
To actually unlock Michael's mission, you first need to complete a series of contact jobs for Avi Schwartzman. Look on your map for a new "A" icon, which marks a ringing payphone. Answer it and Avi will explain his plan to go after the KnoWay self-driving taxi company. He'll offer you the first of five setup missions, which function almost like a quick heist arc and gradually build toward the finale.
These five setup jobs—names like Negative Press, Inside Job, Trash Talking, Tunnel Vision, and A Clean Break—have you doing everything from blowing up autonomous taxis to sneaking into restricted areas and grabbing data while dealing with heavier and heavier resistance. After finishing each one, a new payphone icon will pop up somewhere else in the city. Head there, listen to Avi's next briefing, and keep going until all five are wrapped up. You'll make some decent money along the way, too.
Once the entire KnoWay Out chain is finished, you won't be thrown straight into Michael's mission. Instead, Avi will call you after a short pause and warn you that KnoWay mercenaries are planning to hit your mansion. He'll then send you an invite to "Home Sweet Home," which is the actual mission involving Michael. Accept it quickly from your phone or job list so you don't break the momentum.
When you start "Home Sweet Home," you'll either spawn at or load into your mansion to find it crawling with enemies. The layout and some enemy placements depend on which mansion you bought, but the general idea is the same: fight your way through the house, clear out attackers, keep your allies alive, and follow the objectives deeper inside. Michael shows up during these sequences, both in cutscenes and during the action, so expect to stick close to him and move through tight rooms and hallways where good cover and quick reactions matter.
It helps to go in fully stocked—with armor, snacks, and weapons suited for close-quarters and mid-range fights, since most of the mission happens indoors or around the property. Bringing a coordinated group makes things smoother, as you can split responsibilities between watching staircases, balconies, and outdoor approaches while others push forward. If you're the host, it's worth keeping an eye on newer players so you can revive them quickly and avoid unnecessary restarts.
Finishing "Home Sweet Home" for the first time nets you a hefty payout of around half a million and leaves the door open for more story content involving Michael and possibly other returning characters. You can replay the mission afterward for smaller but still worthwhile rewards, making it a solid addition to your rotation. But for most players, the real reward is finally teaming up with Michael De Santa in GTA Online and turning that pricey mansion into both a fun battleground and a memorable story moment.
